NIL has taken over college football, but for the most part fans know very little about how their favorite team operates in that space. That however is no longer the case for Georgia.
Kirby Smart just opened up and shared some exclusive details about Georgia's NIL strategy and what he shared fills in the gaps about what has been unknown for years.
“I don’t want you to have to take a discount,” Smart said via dawgnation.com. “OK, a discount might be a little less than year one or two. We have we have traditionally paid our players junior and senior year as much as anybody at those positions. We don’t want to start [earlier] because I want you to earn it and work your way up.”
Kirby Smart reveals important truth about Georgia football's NIL strategy
Smart confirmed that they do not want to overpay for recruits out of high school. This makes sense because there have been plenty of recruitments that seemed like were going Georgia's way only for the player to flip to a different school at the last second. And more often than not these recruits are not quiet about how much a large NIL offer mattered to them.
Smart however does not want to spend money on these players and would rather spend it on upperclessmen who have proven themselves. In fact, he said Georgia is paying these players just as much as any other school.
This strategy is why Georgia hardly ever loses productive players to the Transfer Portal. Not only are they winning on the field a lot at Georgia but they are being compensated just as much as they would at any other school.
This strategy has led to some frustrations on the recruiting trail, but it also has led to multiple championships. And if that trend continues going forward then no one should have a problem it.
