NIL is a strange thing in college football because everyone knows how it important it is but fans don't really understand how it works. The concept is very straight forward, but no fan truly knows how these negotiations with players or recruits actually works.
Kirby Smart was recently asked about what his involvement in Georgia's NIL is, and he either chose to not say much at all or he is truly not that involved.
"I'm involved,” Smart said via 247Sports.com. “There's decisions that have to be made. Different ways to be creative. I think everyone is trying to find the best things they can do for their university. We've got people that do that. They certainly bring ideas and bounce things off of you. It's important, you've got to have the revenue to be able to compete and that's a big part of it."
Kirby Smart’s hands off approach to Georgia’s NIL may surprise some people
Smart clearly is involved with NIL at some capacity because that’s what he literally said, but it also sounds like he isn’t that involved. It sounds like he basically is a sounding board for the people truly in charge of NIL if they have questions or new ideas, but overall he more than likely is pretty hands off.
That most likely is by design because Smart has made it pretty clear what he thinks about NIL. He likes it and thinks it’s good for the players, but he doesn’t want any player to come to Georgia if that’s their main motivation. So if any player or recruit wants to extensively talk to him about NIL they are probably in the wrong place.
The good thing for Smart is that he doesn’t have to be worried about NIL. Sure Georgia has a lot they can spend, but Georgia sells itself to recruits.
Their history of winning and sending players to the NFL speaks for itself, so if players care more about a check than that then Smart won’t be sad to see them walk away.
