Kirby Smart’s Transfer Portal philosophy is one of the best decisions he’s ever made

Tansfer Portal season is in full swing, but so far Georgia only has commitments from nine transfers. That is far less than the average team across the country and is significantly less than the 15 players they lost to the portal.

While there is still plenty of time for Kirby Smart to add more players from the portal, at this point it seems like he is happy with the way his roster is shaping up. And based on how Georgia has played the last two years, this philosophy was the perfect strategy.

Georgia’s Transfer Portal strategy is working to perfection

Georgia just won their second straight SEC title this past season. This past year however Georgia won the conference with over half of their players being freshmen or sophomores. So why would Smart recruit over the players who just won the SEC and earned the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff?

Recruiting over those players would be a terrible decision for two reasons. The first is that they already showed they can play well enough to win the SEC and contend for a National Championship. So now that they’re a year older one can assume they will be able to lead Georgia to even greater success next season.

Recruiting over these players would also be a bad look on the perception of Georgia’s program. What would Smart be telling future recruits if he is willing to recruit over them even if they find a lot of success? Doing that would make it much more difficult to convinced recruits in the future to come to Georgia in the first place.

So while other schools might be having flashier offseasons it is important for Georgia to know that their more “boring” offseason is actually the best thing for the program right now.
