The Transfer Portal has quickly become one of the most important things in all of college football. If a program wants to be successful they have to use it, but the amount that teams should rely on it is widely debated.

There are some programs who rely on it each and every season to essentially build a brand new team, then there are schools like Georgia who use it supplement a few spots where it is obvious that they need some assistance.

That is exactly what Kirby Smart did this past offseason at Georgia. In fact, he is challenging just how important the Transfer Portal is because the Bulldogs 15 transfers are the fewest in the SEC this year.

Georgia must overcome their lack of transfers to win SEC again

Many fans and analysts believe that a team has to exploit the Transfer Portal if they are going to seriously compete for championships. While using the portal can help, Smart has proven that he doesn't need to do that at Georgia.

Ever since the Transfer Portal first began he has never relied on it. Instead he focuses on keeping as many players in Athens as possible, and if there is an obvious hole they need to fill then they will go get a transfer.

This has led to Georgia using the portal far less than most schools in the country, and so far that has led to multiple National and SEC Championships. This season however will be different as they have much less than every other school in the SEC.

Will this benefit or hurt Georgia this season? Some might see it as a disadvantage, but considering the Bulldogs have the fifth-most returning production in the country from a team that just won the SEC this actually seems like an advantage. On top of that, Georgia also has the easiest schedule in the SEC this season too.

So can Georgia win the SEC for the third year in a row? Absolutely they can. But will they actually? Only time will tell.

Georgia can change how programs view the Transfer Portal this season

The Transfer Portal needs a massive overhaul. Overall it is a good thing that players can move between schools now, but a large amount of them are changing schools every offseason which was not the intent.

Schools feel like they have no choice but to let players dictate the market, but if Georgia can win the SEC and a National Championship maybe they can change how schools use the portal. If they can win it all while only adding 15 transfers maybe other schools will start prioritizing keeping their roster in tact versus changing the makeup of their team every year.

Every college football fan should want this, but that will only happen if a school who doesn't use the portal that much wins a national title. And while fans may not want to see Georgia keep winning, they are the most equipped to show the college football world that you don't need to rely on the portal to be an elite program.
