Kirby Smart recently has been very open about what he thinks is wrong with the Transfer Portal. Recently he explained how a large percentage of players who enter the portal don't end up seeing any on-field benefit because of that decision.
Now that he has shared his opinion on the portal it's time for him to take aim at NIL. And in the below quote he indirectly said that former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck made a big financial mistake by returning to college last year instead of staying in the NFL Draft.
"There are players taking pay cuts to go to the NFL," Smart said during an interview with CBS Sports' Josh Pate. "You know, we know what league minimum is in the National Football League."
"I have convinced myself we have got to show them realistic ways to invest and make money," Smart continued. "We bring speakers in to do that. We all talk about tax education, financial education. We're so invested in that now than we ever were before because we see the pitfalls.”
Kirby Smart thinkgs Carson Beck made a big mistake
Smart didn't say Beck's name specifically, but what he is describing fits Beck's situation to perfection.
Beck returned to college football last year to play for Miami. That decision came with a reported $4 million payday. Beck now is off to the NFL after having a good year with the Hurricanes and making all of that cash, but now he will make less than he did last year.
Beck signed a 4-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals worth over $7 million, but that comes out to much less annually than the $4 million he made last year alone.
Had Beck stayed in the NFL Draft last year he may have made more than these two deals combined, but that is a decision he will have to live with. But Smart sent a warning to every player thinking about transferring for more money because he doesn't believe that is always the best financial decision in the long run.
