Kirby Smart shared if he’s thought about replacing Carson Back at QB
A lot went wrong for Georgia football during their loss to Ole Miss on Saturday. And unfortunately all the things that went wrong are issues that have already existed at some point throughout the season. Georgia’s been able to survive and keep winning games because all of their issues haven’t flared up in the same game, but that was not the case against the Rebels.
One of those issues for Georgia that has been present for a few weeks now is the play from Carson Beck. He’s continued to struggle week after week, with many fans thinking it’s time for Kirby Smart to make a change at QB.
Smart was asked about if he’s thought about making a QB change, and his answer makes it very clear that he has not.
"Absolutely not," Smart said via 247sports.com. "We've got a quarterback who's completely competent, capable, and understanding of our system that gives us the best chance to win."
Smart has not flirted with the idea of making a QB change
According to Smart, it sounds like he hasn’t even thought about making a QB change this season. But is that the right decision?
Beck is clearly struggling, and so far this season he hasn’t shown any improvement at all on the parts of his game that he is struggling with. But if Smart thinks he still gives Georgia the best chance to win games, then that’s who he’s going to continue playing at QB.
There is a lot of truth to what Smart said about Beck knowing the offense the best out of any other QB, but should that be the determining factor of who the starter should be? Most Georgia fans would probably say no.
Alabama is the perfect example of this for what they did to Georgia in the national championship game in 2018. Jalen Hurts played horrible in the first half against Georgia before being benched in favor of freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa. All Georgia fans know what happened after this as the Tide stormed back to win in overtime.
So if that QB change worked so well for Nick Saban in the national title game, it does seem a little silly for Smart to not even consider going with a new QB.
But for now it sounds like Georgia is going to ride with Beck for the remainder of the season, so let’s just hope that decision pays off this year and isn’t something that’s debated all offseason.
