Kirby Smart shares 4 updates on Carson Beck's injury
Georgia football's worst nightmare came true in their 22-19 overtime victory over Texas in the SEC Championship game. Any injury is always a bad thing, but it's hard to come across a worse injury than one happening to your starting quarterback.
And that is exactly what happened on the final play of the first half when Carson Beck was sacked from behind while in his throwing motion.
It looked ugly the second it happened, and more than a handful of training staff were out to him the second the play ended. And unfortunately this injury kept him out for the rest of the game, other than the game-winning hand off to Trevor Etienne in overtime.
Thankfully Georgia doesn't play again until Jan. 1, so Beck has a lot of time to get healthy again, but there is a chance this injury is serious enough to the point where this amount of time is nowhere near enough to get him back.
During a press conference on Sunday, Kirby Smart was asked a lot of questions about his star quarterback's health, and ended up sharing four important details about his status.
Carson Beck and punter Brett Thorson injury status
"Don't have much," Smart shared via 247sports.com. "The MRI was done this morning along with Carson's, and we're awaiting results on both of those."
Will Kirby Smart, Georgia have an update on Beck later tonight?
"Yeah, again, I don't know because I'm not following it. I've got a lot of other things going on. They'll reach out to me once they do know something and get back to us."
On how Carson Beck's mood is
"Yeah, he was at a team meeting. I think he had just gotten back from the MRI, so I think he was pretty somber. A tough deal for him in terms of not being able to go out there and finish in the second half. But he's also excited for his teammates and happy that it ended the way it did, and ironically he got to be on the field for that."
On what Carson Beck specifically injured
"The elbow area is what we understand it to be. At the time, I didn't know walking off the field. I wasn't sure. It looked like it could be shoulder, like it could be wrist. It actually looked like the blow or the contact was to the wrist-slash-forearm area, but the strain or pain was around the elbow."
Key Takeaways
It's hard to take anything away from these comments right now, and the last thing anyone should do is speculate on what might happen and if Beck will be able to return or not. But it's hard to find any confidence from these comments from Smart.
According to Smart, Beck looked somber after his MRI Sunday morning, and any injury to the elbow of a quarterback is very dangerous and extremely difficult to overcome. So things are not looking great.
The only bright side is that Georgia has plenty of time to get backup Gunner Stockton ready to go if Beck is ruled out, but hopefully it doesn't get to that point and Beck is able to play in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
