Georgia football handled their business last Saturday as they blew Tennessee State out 63-3. They now have another easy game on the horizon against Western Kentucky up next where they could likely show up without preparing and still win.
That is not how Kirby Smart is approaching this game and he shared the perfect motto he has for his team heading into this machup.
"So, should be a great opportunity for us to continue to get better and we have a saying around here, ‘You don't have to be sick to get better,’ and that's been the motto of last week and this week," Smart said via dawgscentral.com.
Georgia doesn't have to play someone good to get better
One of the last things Georgia needs right now is to get complacent. Sure they just beat a team by 60 points, but that was expected. Beating an FCS team isn't worth celebrating, and Kirby Smart knows that.
Georgia is expected to beat Western Kentucky easily this week as well, but that doesn't mean they can't get better. There are a few things that didn't go great in week one like their special teams play and the lack of a forced turnover, so these are obvious areas where they can improve. Georgia as a whole isn't anywhere close to where they need to be to win a national championship either even after winning 60, and that's why they can't afford to take this week off.
Georgia doesn't have to be sick to get better. That's the motto that Smart has for his team this week. This means that even though their game against Tennessee State went extremely well they still have room for improvement. They don't need to wait for a bump in the road before they strive to get better. Georgia needs to keep improving right now, and that's what Smart intends on doing.
Georgia can't ignore another opportunity for their backups to get playing time
Georgia's upcoming matchup against Western Kentucky is another opportunity for them to protect themselves. By that we mean they have a chance to not only keep their resume strong by winning by a large margin, but they can get their backups in for a good chunk of the game as well to help avoid key injuries.
Smart was hoping to get the backups in for a good amount of the game last week, and that's exactly what happened as Gunner Stockton and other starters were pulled before halftime. This allowed Georgia to avoid injuries to their key players and to let their backups compete for future playing time as well.
Georgia will hopefully get to rest their key players again this week, but they have to handle their business early against Western Kentucky first. They will be expected to run away with this game in a similar fashion to last week, but they can only do that if they are 100 percent focused on this week.
As long as Georgia buys into this motto from Smart then that shouldn't be a problem.
