Ed Orgeron has flirted with the idea of returning to LSU since he and Tigers mutually agreed to part ways after the 2021 season. Orgeron was the head coach at LSU for the Tigers historic National Championship season in 2019, but soon after he quickly showed that he was no longer the right guy for the job.
Orgeron has shown a lot of interest in returning as an assistant in some capacity, and that time has finally come as Lane Kiffin just announced his addition to his coaching staff. It doesn't appear that he will be a traditional on field coach though as he will spend most of his time with the recruiting department.
“I’m excited to bring Coach Orgeron back to LSU,” LSU head coach Lane Kiffin said via on3.com. “He brings us tremendous value with his ability to recruit elite players nationally, but especially the impact he can have for us recruiting the great state of Louisiana. Coach O understands my expectations and commitment to being a championship program. I look forward to seeing him with recruits and his intensity working with our defensive players.”
This is a serious problem for Kirby Smart and Georgia as four-star safety Adryan Cole, who is one of their top in-state targets, is heading to LSU for an official visit next weekend.
Ed Orgeron's return to LSU comes at the worst time for Georgia
Cole was just in Athens last weekend on a visit. That visit went extremely well as he was one of three recruits that were in town that were predicted to commit to Georgia. There still isn't a commitment date known, but Rivals currently gives Georgia a 90 percent chance to win his recruitment.
Cole still plans on taking other visits, and it just so happens that he will be at LSU next weekend on May 29. This will more than likely be Orgeron's first time interacting with recruits, so of course it has to happen when one of Smart's top targets is in town.
Orgeron is one of those coaches that recruits seem to gravitate towards. His energy and vibe can't be replicated by anyone, so if a recruit gels with him then LSU will have a good chance to land them. Hopefully that does not happen with Cole during his visit next week.
Lane Kiffin is building a powerhouse at LSU that should have Georgia very concerned
LSU has always been a program capable of winning at the highest level. Georgia and Alabama might be more consistent than them, but any given year they have the potential to win a championship.
Kiffin is fresh off a successful stint with Ole Miss, and if he can win there then he can most certainly win at LSU. And with Orgeron helping him recruit they might be unstoppable.
LSU has the distinct advantage of being the only big school in their state. And with all the high school talent in Louisiana they really benefit from keeping those kids in the state. Kiffin more than likely would've been just fine recruiting these players on his own, but a Louisiana legend like Orgeron will take their recruiting to another level.
Orgeron's title at LSU didn't happen that long ago. All of the high school recruits today are old to remember him and Joe Burrow dominating college football in 2019, so seeing him back on staff will stand out to a lot of recruits and make them take a harder look at LSU.
Kiffin and Smart might be buddies off the field, but this is a move that will make Smart lose some sleep.
