There are a lot of reasons why Georgia should be proud of their win over Ole Miss on Saturday. Unfortunately all of the positive takeaways from this game come on the offensive side of the ball as Georgia’s defense struggled for much of night against the Rebels.
Immediately after the game Kirby Smart opened up about his frustrations with his defense, and he was brutally honest in his evaluation.
“The way we played defensively, you’re probably going to lose games,” Smart shared via dawgnation.com. “But, look, as bad as we played on defense, I can sit here and tell you without watching the tape, that’s a really good offense. When you go up against them, they have really good weapons, they’ve got a good plan, and the quarterback run element right now for them makes it really hard to defend.”
Kirby Smart calls out Georgia’s defense after another lackluster performance
The biggest problem Georgia has faced this season is inconsistent play from their defense. The Bulldogs defense has looked very strong at various points this season, but they unfortunately did not have many good moments against Ole Miss. In fact, Georgia gave up a touchdown the first five times Ole Miss had the football.
That major issue, along with the fact that Georgia’s defense has struggled all season, led Smart to call them out during his postgame press conference. He even went as far as to say that Georgia will eventually lose some games if they don’t start playing better.
Even though Smart is obviously disappointed in his defense, he knows they have had some good moments too. He also knows that Ole Miss might be the best offense they face all season.
But at the end of the day he knows this group hasn’t been good enough, and if they don’t find some answers it’s just a matter of time until they lose another game.
