Sunday marked the final day for every NFL team to cut their active roster down to 53 players. This is an exciting time for the former Georgia Bulldogs who are making an NFL team who may have been on the cut line, but for linebacker Monty Rice he unfortunately was cut by the LA Rams.
Rice has had a tough time finding his footing in the NFL over the last few years, and unfortuntely for him that is continuing again this year
LA Rams cut former Georgia Bulldog Monty Rice
Monty Rice had a chance to earn his way onto the Rams' roster this season, but he unfortunately came up short and was cut on Sunday. This has become somewhat of a norm for Rice because he has been cut more times than he would probably like to admit over the past few years.
Rice's career began as a third round draft pick with the Tennessee Titans. He was a regular on their defense for three seasons where he totaled 128 tackles, but after three years he was cut which started a tough run in the league.
After being cut by the Titans he was then picked up and cut four more times by the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, Detroit Lions and finally by the Rams.
There's a chance he will get signed to a practice squad for the upcoming season, but the last few years of his career don't provide much hope for much success throughout the rest of his career.
LA Rams still have one more big decision to make with a former Georgia Bulldog
Similarly to Rice, the Rams also have to make a big decision when it comes to former quarterback Stetson Bennett. He wasn't cut like Rice, but the Rams have to decide if he or Ty Simpson will be their backup quarterback for the upcoming season.
So far in Bennett's career he has only ever been No. 3 on the Rams' depth chart, but this offseason he was given a chance to compete for the backup job against Simpson. Both players have had their moments throughout training camp and their preseason games, so it's hard to know what the Rams are going to do, but Bennett has made a strong case for why he deserves to be their backup.
The Rams also have to decide if they want to trade Bennett or not. This is Bennett's final year of his contract and NFL analysts believe the Rams will let him walk after this season into free agency. Instead of letting that happen they could opt to trade him to get something in return instead.
The Rams haven't made any indication that this will happen, but it is something that NFL analysts and fans believe is possible.
Georgia fans should hope that Rice is able to find his footing in the NFL and Bennett is given a chance to be a starter at some point in his career. Both players playing big roles during their time at Georgia, so UGA fans should want nothing less than successful NFL careers for them both as well.
