Georgia football thought they were in a good spot with five-star running back Derrek Cooper with his commitment date of July 12 approaching. The Bulldogs were the team predicted to win and all signs pointed towards that coming true in a little over a week.

But Cooper has since backed off that commitment date for reasons unknown. This made Georgia fans wonder if Cooper is no longer trending to UGA because he did not share what date he now plans to commit. But an inside scoop from Dawg Post insider Matt DeBary shows that Georgia not only still leads for Cooper, but he could be committing much sooner than July 12.

"Those are no longer the plans and sources say Cooper could make a commitment sooner, possibly early next week or in the coming days," Matt DeBary shared via dawgpost.com. "Sources say the Bulldogs are in a favorable position to land him, but the Texas Longhorns and local Miami Hurricanes also have his full attention."

Georgia could land their next 5-star any day now

While Georgia currently has the No. 2 recruiting class in the country, the Bulldogs only have one five-star commit. To be fair that player is Jared Curtis who is the No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 class, but Georgia would love nothing more than to add some five-star talent around him.

That is where Cooper comes in as he would be an elite recruit to pair with Curtis in the Georgia backfield for years to come.

Cooper's finalists consist of Miami (FL), Texas, Ohio State, Florida State and Georgia, so this will not be an easy recruitment to win. But it sounds like Georgia is still the leader even after Cooper cancelled his original commitment date, and he may be coming off the board much sooner than anyone expects.
