Transfer Portal news can be really hit or miss for Georgia. Sometimes a player leaves the program and it’s the worst case scenario, but sometimes Georgia strikes gold in the portal like they did with Zachariah Branch.

One thing is certain though, every offseason there will be a lot of Transfer Portal news that impacts the program. This includes major news involving other SEC programs.

The latest Transfer Portal news to come out of the SEC involves Florida quarterback DJ Lagway who intends to enter the portal and leave Florida this offseason. And no one at Georgia needs to be told how much this impacts UGA’s pursuit of a third straight SEC title next season.

Georgia’s path to winning the SEC in 2026 just got a little easier

Lagway is a former five-star recruit that Georgia had a lot of interest in out of high school. At the time it was unfortunate to see him choose the Gators, but since then Georgia has won the SEC twice with Florida having two terrible seasons. The Gators then fired head coach Billy Napier earlier this year, and that is likely what is causing Lagway to enter the portal.

Lagway never found the success at Florida that anyone expected, but he did play pretty well against Georgia. In 2024 he had Florida’s offense humming against Georgia before getting hurt and missing the rest of the game. Had he stayed healthy there was a good chance Florida wins that game, but that did not happen.

Injuries continued to plague Lagway last offseason which severely impacted his development heading into 2025. This prevented him from taking a step forward this season, but it’s expected that he’ll be much improved next season with a fully healthy offseason under his belt.

That however won’t be happening at Florida, and this is good news for Georgia. The Bulldogs will once again play Florida next season, and Lagway absolutely possesses the ability to take Georgia down. Georgia however will no longer have to worry about him, and his departure should make their chances of winning a third straight SEC title a little easier.

Lagway could end up at an SEC school like LSU, so there’s a chance he could still get in Georgia’s way next season. But not playing for one of Georgia’s biggest rivals is a good thing that should help UGA beat Florida again next year.
