LB Jalon Walker named SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week
There were so many great performances during Georgia's 30-15 win against No. 1 Texas on Saturday. The entire defense played extremely well, running back Trevor Etienne had his best game of the season, and the coaching staff themselves deserve a lot of credit as well.
But there is one player in particular who played especially well, and I'm guessing you know who I am talking about.
Linebacker Jalon Walker.
Not only did Walker have one of the best performances of the game, but it was one of the best performances of the sesaon in the entire country.
Walker finished Georgia's game against Texas with a team high eight tackles which included three sacks. This performance, to no one's surprise, was good enough for him to be named one of the SEC Co-Defensive Players of the Week.
And to make Walker's week that much more impressive, he did something that no player has done in all of college football in the last 20 years. According to ESPN's Jordan Reid, Walker is the first player in 20 years to finish with at least seven tackles and three sacks against the No. 1 team in the country.
That feat is impressive on it's own, but Walker actually pulled that off in the first half alone.
In a game where Georgia's offense once again struggled to move the ball early in the first quarter, it was the Bulldogs' defense that kept them in the game. Not only did they keep Georgia in the game, but they helped set the offense up with great field position multiple times. And a lot of that was due to the elite performance we witnessed from Walker.
Obviously this is a stat line we can't expect from Walker every game, but seeing him (and the entire defense for that matter) hitting their stride against one of the best offenses in the country is very encouraging. If the defense plays this well all season long, then there is a good a chance Georgia is going to win some hardware later this year.
