The quarterback battle in Athens is still going strong, and head coach Kirby Smart has yet to name a starter. However, there is one former legendary quarterback from Georgia who is weighing in on the Gunner Stockton and Ryan Puglisi battling it out, and the guy he is backing may surprise you.

Former Georgia quarterback Buck Belue, who won a National Championship with Georgia back in 1980, took to his radio show, 680thefan, and put his support behind Stockton. Belue believes that Stockton should be the starter for the Bulldogs this season.

"I'll be anxious to check out Gunner Stockton, QB1, the starter coming into the season," Belue said. "Really excited about what Gunner's gonna do this season."

The best part about Belue's comments about Stockton is that he acknowledged the doubters, including notorious SEC analyst Paul Finebaum, and even called Finebaum out for not knowing what it takes to truly be an elite quarterback in the SEC.

"I know there's a lot of doubters out there and people are wondering, even some critics out there like my boy [Paul] Finebaum," Belue said. "Who probably doesn't have the best idea of what it takes to be an outstanding quarterback in the SEC."

Even though college football is different today than when it was back in the 1980s, Belue still has a pretty good idea of what it takes to be that kind of quarterback because he was. Belue is excited to see how Stockton throws the ball this season and believes he is going to have a big year, which means he certainly believes Stockton should and will be the starter.

Where does the Georgia quarterback battle stand right now?

Georgia had its first fall scrimmage this past weekend, and the quarterback battle certainly seems closer than ever after Puglisi's performance. While it seems like the decision is for Stockton to be the starter, Puglisi certainly isn't just lying down and letting it happen; he is fighting for that spot.

While Stockton had some good throws in the scrimmage, the slow start on offense can be attributed to him, as he is the one who has to get them going. Puglisi, however, made an amazing touchdown pass to Noah Thomas that some were saying was the best play of the day between the two quarterbacks.

So Stockton is really having to work for his job here, and it seems the battle is still neck and neck right now.
