In the future, if you look up the word "bittersweet" you may very well find a mention of the Georgia Bulldogs 2026 baseball team and their untimely exit from the College World Series, along with star infielder Kolby Branch grabbing his moment of joy.
In the Bulldogs' 11-4 defeat to red-hot Oklahoma, Branch provided a timeless and lasting memory for every Georgia fan, and especially for his family.
In the bottom of the 9th inning, with the game seemingly out of reach for Georgia, Branch stepped to the plate for what would likely be the final at-bat of his college career. With his brother Kyle playing second base for Oklahoma and watching, Kolby smacked a solo home run and exhuberantly trotted his way around the bases, touching hands with his brother as he ran by.
What an absolutely incredible moment for the Branch family in Kolby Branch's final collegiate AB, getting to high five his brother rounding the bases while parents are in stands.

This, not the final out that sent Oklahoma to the finals, is how Georgia fans should remember the 2026 team. A team that was built on power giving one last gasp of energy as the clock was winding down on the season.
The Branch family was in tears. The announcers sounded nearly incredulous. And the remaining Georgia faithful in the stands had one last reason to celebrate this amazing collection of talent and grit.
It wasn't the CWS ending Georgia fans wanted, but it was still magical
Some may look back and say, this was supposed to be the team. This squad was going to erase 35 years of frustration and bring the first national title in baseball back to Athens since 1990. They had all the earmarks of a champion, but fell short.
I look back and say it was a team as good as any Georgia baseball team we've ever seen. They posted historic numbers, and had a national following. But that moment -- that singular at-bat -- sums it up better than anything.
The look on the Georgia shortstop's face as he rounded the bases, knowing he had scripted the perfect swan song. The wide eyes and grin worn by his brother as he watched the baseball sail out of the park, not thinking of competitors, but sharing all the exultation with his sibling.
It was, as baseball can so often be, perfection contained within in a 90 foot by 90 foot diamond. Emotion so raw and thick you can almost hug it.
No, don't get lost in the sadness. Don't mire in the murky waters of "what if" or "if only". Watch that home run and the reactions from everyone involved, and know that despite not bringing home a trophy, this is a team of champions and one of the most memorable baseball seasons a Georgia fan could ever imagine.
Thank you, Kolby, and thank you Bulldogs.
