Georgia football’s offense did not live up to their expectations last season. There are a lot of things UGA could blame as the cause for their struggles on offense, but many fans came to the same consensus, the consensus that offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is to blame.

Georgia fans became so angry with Bobo that they began calling for him to be fired after Georgia’s loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff.

While Bobo deserves at least some of the blame, some believe he is not the biggest reason for Georgia’s struggles on offense. One of those people is former Georgia head coach Mark Richt, who gave Bobo a pass for one specific reason.

“I think Mike (Bobo) caught more hell than he should have last year,” Richt shared via dawgnation.com. “I think Georgia dropped more balls than any team in America. If someone just took the stats and said every ball that was catchable was caught, and you added up those receptions, yardage and possible touchdowns, who knows what kind of season they have offensively.”

At the end of the day, coaches can only do so much. A coach is required to put their players in position to succeed, but they can’t help those players make the plays during the game once they are in position.

This is why Richt thinks Bobo deserves a pass because Georgia’s wide receivers dropped so many passes last season. In fact, Georgia’s wide receivers led the nation in drops during the 2024 season.

Bobo was able to call the right plays to get his wide receivers open, and that is Bobo’s main job. His job isn’t to help his players catch the ball, that is solely up to them. Sure one good argue that Bobo could force his players to practice more to help them improve their catching abilities, but any wide receiver at Georgia should be good enough to catch a pass that hits their hands.

It will be interesting to see if the same problem exists this season or not. If Georgia’s offense leads the nation in drops again during the 2025 season with a new quarterback and wide receivers then maybe Bobo does deserve more blame. But until that happens, Richt is probably right that Bobo deserves a pass after the struggles last season.
