Kaiden Prothro was recruited as a five-star tight end by Georgia out of high school. One day in at fall camp though and Mike Bobo has already decided to change his position and turn him into a wide receiver instead.
When Prothro committed to Georgia last year there was a feeling that this could eventually happen. Prothro played both tight end and wide receiver in high school, and there's a good chance he will line up at both positions throughout his college career as well. But for now he is predominantly going to play wide receiver, and that could be a smart choice for Bobo to make right now.

Kaiden Prothro can help solve Georgia's inexperience at wide receiver
Georgia lost six of their top seven pass catchers from last season to the NFL. That is a scary thing to see because Georgia will now have to rely on a mostly unproven players throughout the season.
Prothro is as unproven as anyone in Georgia's wide receiver room considering he is a true freshman. Switching to wide receiver though will improve Georgia's chances of surviving this inexperience though.
A few of Georgia's inexperienced pass catchers may not be ready for the big stage this year. That wouldn't mean they are bad by any means, but they may just need a little more time to develop before they're ready to be significant contributors for Georgia. Kirby Smart and Mike Bobo are hoping though that at least handful of their young receivers will be ready for the spotlight, so the more players given a chance the better their odds they find enough players who are ready.
It remains to be seen if Prothro will be ready to make a big impact this fall or not. He could be a matchup nightmare for any defensive back though as he stands at 6'6'' and has the quickness and agility of a smaller receiver.
So out of all of Georgia's young wide receivers, don't be surprised if Prothro becomes one of Gunner Stockton's most reliable targets by the end of the season.
Georgia's tight end room is deep and can likely survive without Kaiden Prothro
Switching Prothro to wide receiver also makes sense when you look at Georgia's depth at tight end. Lawson Luckie is the seasoned vet that will lead this group, but below him are countless former four and five-star recruits who are ready to make a name for themselves.
This includes players like Lincoln Keyes, Ethan Barbour, Elyiss Williams, Jaden Reddel and Colton Heinrich just to name a few.
Georgia's tight end room is pretty full and being regarded as one of the best, if not the No. 1, tight end room in the country by some members of the media. There should be plenty of depth at tight end with or without Prothro, so sliding him over to wide receiver where there are more questions marks is a smart choice by Bobo.
If Georgia finds out during the season that they actually need Prothro at tight end then he can always switch back. In fact, the ability to play both positions could work in Georgia's favor by making it even more challenging for opposing defenders to plan for him.
Switching him to wide receiver was a wise choice, but potentially the smartest way to use Prothro this year and throughout his career is mixing up looks and giving him snaps at both positions every game.
