Mike Bobo's offense has been on another level so far this season. In fact, Georgia has the top offense in the country through the first two weeks of the season as their 66.5 points per game leads the nation.
This offseason Bobo was doubted from fans and analysts all across the country including Georgia fans, but he hasn't given them any room to talk yet this season. Sure no one shouldn't celebrate too much because of the level of competition they've played so far this season, but Bobo deserves credit for handling his business how he should and making the needed changes to Georgia's offense that he promised.
Mike Bobo has kept his promise of a more explosive Georgia offense
One of the biggest talking points all offseason was the need for Georgia to be more explosive on offense. Bobo talked about it in great length as did Kirby Smart, even Gunner Stockton mentioned it throughout the offseason as well. It’s impossible to score 66.5 points per game without being explosive, but Bobo has made a conscious effort to call more plays with explosive potential.
Stockton has taken more shots down the field more often than last year. He hasn’t needed to throw the ball down the field because Georgia’s dominated their first two opponents, but when he was in the game they were still taking shots down the field to show off his improved arm.
This won’t mean much if it doesn’t continue now that their competition is getting more difficult, but so far Bobo has kept his promise to change his play calling.
Bobo still loves his screen passes, but they typically work so even if they aren’t the most exciting play they are effective. If that continues along with some deep shots down the field it could be nearly impossible to defend Georgia’s offense, especially if Nate Frazier keeps scoring as often as he is on the ground.
Mike Bobo has to prove himself when the lights shine brightest
The largest issue fans have had with Bobo is that he hasn’t been able to win a playoff game at Georgia. The SEC Championships the last two years do and should matter when analyzing Bobo’s time at Georgia, but winning a playoff game is the most important thing.
The argument could be made that Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss last year isn’t his fault since they scored 34 points, but fans for whatever reason still put most of the blame on him. Regardless of if that’s fair the only way for it to stop is to win a playoff game.
Georgia is expected to make the College Football Playoff again this season, and if they fall short of winning a playoff game for the fourth year in a row fans will rightfully be upset. Even if the loss isn’t Bobo’s fault he will inevitably receive some of the blame, so to avoid that Georgia has to win at least one playoff game this season and prove they can still make a run in the playoff.
