Georgia football's quarterfinal matchup against Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff has officially been delayed to Thursday, Jan. 2 after the tragic events that unfolded on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early Wednesday morning.
10 individuals lost their lives and over two dozen more were injured after a man in a truck drove through a crowd of people celebrating the New Year. This horrific act has impacted the lives of many and have made what was one of the biggest games of the year an afterthought.
However, the Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame will still go on just a few hours after it was originally scheduled.
New Sugar Bowl time announced
Jed May with Rivals has reported that the Sugar Bowl will be played on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 4:00 pm EST.
Finding a new date and time is a very difficult thing to do based on all of the circumstances. The tragic events that unfolded 100 percent cause for a delay in this game, and a delay longer than 24 hours or a location change likely was considered as well. But the winner of this game will take on Penn State in the CFP semifinals on Jan. 9, so this game needs to be played as soon as possible so the winner has ample time to recover and prepare to take on the Nittany Lions in the next round.
The hope now is that these events won't take too much excitment away from one of the biggest games of the season, but it's hard to see how that won't happen considering this game feels like an afterthought at this point. But hopefully both teams are ready to go when this new game time rolls around, because they still deserve to be celebrated after the great seasons both teams have had this year.
