Kirby Smart has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in college football. The only thing he has left to do is chase the ghost that is Nick Saban.

Saban is the gold standard for college football coaches after all the success he found with Alabama. But the sport was much different back then as he never really had to deal with NIL and the Transfer Portal.

The portal specifically has brought the most changes to college football. Schools aren't able to stack talent like they once could, and that is arguably the biggest reason why Saban found all the success he did. Now college football has more parity as the talent has spread out, and Saban believes this is a good thing even though he benefited from being able to stack talent while he was still coaching.

Nick Saban makes Kirby Smart look better without even trying

Is it a coincidence that Saban is celebrating parity? Parity is the biggest reason why Smart or any other coach will more than likely never win as much as he did, so surely it isn’t just a coincidence that he feels this way.

Smart however won his two titles during the NIL and Transfer Portal era. And while championships are equal no matter how they are won, winning in the modern era today is far more difficult than any title Saban won.

Just imagine if the portal never existed. Smart would be able to stack talent just like Saban did and win just as many championships if not more. But it’s impossible to stack talent nowadays like teams could 10 years ago, and that makes winning today much more difficult.

Saban very well could never have his title as college football’s GOAT ever taken from him because of how the portal has changed the sport. But everyone knows that winning today is much more difficult to do and Saban praising parity is just an attempt to ensure no coach every catches him.
