No matter how much fans ask, Kirby Smart isn't going to make a QB change
Georgia football fans have become increasingly impatient with quarterback Carson Beck this season. Beck returned to Georgia this year when he could have gone pro, so the expectation was that he would improve this year compared to last and be one of the best QBs in the country.
Unfortunately that is not how things have played out. Beck is coming off two straight games with three interceptions, which is far from acceptable even if Georgia won both games.
Beck's struggles this season has brought some in the fanbase to call for Kirby Smart to make the tough decision to bench him and bring in someone new. Those fans however are going to be disappointed, because history says Smart won't be doing that.
Kirby Smart believes in his Quarterbacks
Throughout the course of Smart's tenure at Georgia, he has shown time and time again that he will pick his starting QB and ride with them no matter what. Sometimes this works and other times it hasn't.
The most recent example is Stetson Bennett, who many felt at one time should not have been the starter. But the entire country knows how that decision worked out as Georgia went on to win back-to-back national championships with Bennett leading the offense.
Before Bennett however, there was Jake Fromm, who many Georgia fans to this day still wonder how different those years could have been with a different QB in charge of the offense.
Let's first ackowledge how great of a quarterback Fromm was. He led the Bulldogs to a 35-7 record as a starter which included winning the 2017 SEC Championship. He also brought the Bulldogs to the National Championship game that season, which they came up short in against Alabama. Fromm also led Georgia to double digit win seasons in 2018 and 2019, but Georgia fell short in the SEC Championship game in both seasons.
So for all the success he had at Georgia, many fans still wonder what could have been during those years. Justin Fields was another option at quarterback in 2018, but Smart still chose to ride with Fromm the entire season. Sure Fromm never really did anything to lose the starting job, but looking back on both careers it's clear that Fields was the better player.
So could 2018 and 2019 have played out differently had Fields been the QB? There's a chance, but Georgia fans will never know because Smart stayed loyal to Fromm.
Smart hasn't shown one indication this season that he is even thinking about playing someone at QB other than Beck. And based on his histroy at Georgia, that isn't going to happen.
Time will tell if this decision pays off or not, but Beck is going to have every chance to prove himself and create his own legacy at Georgia. That begins this weekend against Ole Miss followed up with Tennessee in the SEC regular season finale. Win these games and Georgia will cruise to the SEC championship game and College Football Playoffs, where Beck will have a chance to go down as one of the all time great Georgia quarterbacks.
