The SEC will begin playing nine conference games next season. One of the downsides of adding another conference game are less non-conference matchups against teams on Georgia’s level.
The Bulldogs already had to cancel a home-and-home series with Louisville which was scheduled to begin this fall, and there’s a chance for more cancellations in the future.
Ohio State left Georgia with a difficult decision
Georgia has a home-and-home series with Ohio State scheduled to begin in 2030. This obviously would be one of the biggest regular season matchups in college football history, but there is a chance it won’t end up happening.
Ohio State’s Athletic Director was recently asked about the potential of this series being cancelled, and he said that those conversations have not occurred yet.
“I have not heard from my colleagues at those schools that they’re interested in not playing those games, even though they’re going to nine (SEC) games,” Ohio State Athletic Directior Ross Bjork said si.com. “I think they view those high-power matchups – if anything, right now you play them and you win, and then you’re in a great spot.”
As it stands today the Buckeyes do not plan on cancelling this series with Georgia. The Bulldogs however may have no choice as they have four non-conference opponents scheduled for the 2030 season which would give them 13 games. Georgia won’t cancel on Georgia Tech, so there’s a chance OSU could get the boot.
A decision on this series likely won’t come for a few years, but it’s clear that Ohio State is leaving it up to Georgia. Unfortunately it may be in Georgia’s best interest to cancel this series, but if they wish to be bold then they can cancel on North Carolina A&T or Clemson (who is also on their 2030 schedule).
