The SEC expanding to nine games each season has caused many teams to start cancelling their home-and-home series with non-conference opponents. Georgia has done this three times now within the last year as they cancelled with NC State, Louisville and most recently with Florida State on Thursday.

There are good reasons for Kirby Smart to be doing this because they already have 10 Power Four matchups each season now with the nine SEC games and the annual Georgia Tech showdown. Playing 11 Power Four opponents would be a tall task, but fans want to see Georgia play against really good non-conference teams they don't normally play.

That however isn't something Smart and Georgia have been willing to do which means their future series with Ohio State is now in jeopardy. Recent developments show that the Buckeyes won't be cancelling that game though, so it is up to Smart and Georgia to decide what to do.

Ryan Day forces Kirby Smart to make a tough decision on their future home-and-home series

Georgia and Ohio State are scheduled to play a home-and-home series beginning in 2030 in Athens with a second matchup in Columbus in 2031. Based on Georgia's recent decision it seems like just a matter of time until these games get cancelled, but that decision won't be coming from Ohio State.

Alabama and Ohio State just announced that their home-and-home series beginning next year will continue as scheduled. This comes after Ohio State will complete their series with Texas this season after playing the Longhorns last year as well.

Ryan Day clearly won't want to cancel this series, so if that decision is going to be made it will come from Georgia. It makes sense for Georgia to want to cancel this series because of the 10 Power Four matchups already on their schedule, but maybe he will decide to keep this one.

Cancelling this series will have major College Football Playoff implications because it will make Georgia's schedule much easier. However, if Georgia were to beat Ohio State that would give them a leg up on every other school in the country when it comes to playoff seeding.

This clearly is a big decision to make, so it will be interesting to see what Smart and Georgia eventually decide to do.
