Even after Georgia's loss to Auburn this past weekend the Bulldogs still had the second-best odds to win the national championship. The one team above them was Ohio State, but Buckeyes' quarterback Julian Sayin injured his throwing arm against Indiana this past week and he's since been ruled out indefinitely.
Before this news Ohio State had +470 odds to win it all with Georgia not far behind at +490. Now the Bulldogs jumped past Ohio State with +470 odds while Ohio State fell to +480. Notre Dame sits with the third-best odds at +500 with Miami at +700 and Indiana at +800.
Georgia may not have to worry about Ohio State anymore
Ohio State survived a close call at Indiana this past weekend where they picked up an impressive 19-15 win. This moved them to 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming at Texas in Week 2 in a game they led by 20 heading into the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes are that close to being undefeated, but they choked that game away and sit with one loss now.
With the way the season is shaping up there's a chance a couple 9-3 teams get into the playoff this season. That's good news for Ohio State because now they may have to play the rest of the season without their starting quarterback.
No one knows much about their backup, but they will be challenged in their first game as the starter when Ohio State travels to No. 16 USC on Halloween. The Buckeyes however only play one other ranked team this season, so there's a chance they make the playoff even without Sayin.
Even if they do make the playoff it's hard to imagine Ohio State beating Georgia. There's always a chance it could happen, but it's starting to feel like Ohio State isn't a team that UGA needs to worry about anymore.
It feels wrong for Georgia to be the favorite to win it all
It would've made a lot more sense for Georgia to have the best odds to win a national championship after they beat Alabama two weeks ago. Winning on the road in the SEC is difficult, but there is no place more difficult to win at potentially in the country than Alabama. Georgia however went to Tuscaloosa and beat the Tide behind one of quarterback Gunner Stockton's best performances in his career.
Georgia however lost to Auburn at home the next week in college football's biggest upset of the weekend. The Bulldogs are still more than capable of making a run at a championship ever after this loss, but they showed some weaknesses against Auburn that the haven't shown all season so seeing them become the favorite to win it all three days after losing to Auburn doesn't feel right.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter what Vegas says. Sure it is nice to see Georgia have the best odds to win a national championship, but all UGA should care about right now is correcting their mistakes that cost them against Auburn as they get ready to face Florida in two weeks.
