The most resounding question surrounding Georgia was very obvious heading into the new season as they had to find a replacement at receiver for Zachariah Branch.
Branch set records in Athens just one season. In 2025 he broke the record for themost receptions in a single season with over 80 catches. When you lose that type of production to the NFL that could sting any program. When someone like that leaves, you have to answer the question, "Who will step up?"
That question becomes very difficult when five other top receivers behind Branch also graduate and leave the program. However, it only took one win over Tennessee State for Georgia to figure out how they're going to replace Branch.
Talyn Taylor, Bulldog receivers shine in week one
Talyn Taylor, a former five-star recruit, was expected by many to start this year. The true sophomore took that call and turned it into action. Though he had only three catches, what he did with them mattered. Taylor turned those three receptions into 28 yards and a touchdown.
Each of those catches was notably either a short pass or behind the line of scrimmage on a screen, meaning the yards were almost all run after the catch. Taylor's explosiveness was shown in a major way while also having no drops.
The ball was shared pretty evenly among several Bulldogs on Saturday, with the majority of them being underclassmen. The team also did not have any drops or miscues, as many might have thought they would, to open the season. For reference on the explosiveness shown by the receiving group, out of the 15 guys who caught a pass today, only three of them had less than a 10 yards per catch average. That means that either the ball was thrown past the first down marker or the run after the catch was notably high.
The pressure on these guys was lifted by a strong performance by the running backs and tight ends as well. Expect to see lots of runs and play-action passes to the tight ends as the year goes along.
While we cannot overreact in a major way yet, since the spread on this game was 47.5 points, it is refreshing to see what Georgia did in a live game. We saw wide receivers catch the football and do damage with it.
The last time the Bulldogs had a wide receiver group this inexperienced, they led the nation in dropped passes. After today, it does not look like that will be the same story this year. It is week one; we cannot overreact. However, you cannot help but feel good about these receivers after what they did today.
