Georgia football is currently sitting in a prime position with three games left to play this season. The Bulldogs are 8-1 and the No. 5 team in the country and have as great of a shot as anyone to make the 12-team College Football Playoff field once again.
Georgia still has work to do to ensure they make the playoff field, but at this point it is almost a guarantee that they will make the CFP again this year. So naturally the next thing Georgia fans will do is look at what their potential path in the playoff would look like.
That is where things get a little dicey because Georgia's current playoff path is as hard as it can get. As of today Georgia would get an easy win at home against USF in the first round of the CFP, but after that they would have to go through No. 4 Alabama and No. 1 Ohio State just to make it to the National Championship game. It is impossible for a path in the playoff to get more difficult than that, so Georgia should hope that their journey gets easier by the end of the season.
One way their path could get easier is if they lose another game this season, because that would increase their chances of avoiding Alabama and Ohio State until the National Championship game.
Georgia could benefit from another loss this season
If the current CFP bracket remained the same as it currently does at the end of the season, Georgia would benefit from another loss this season. Georgia would still make the 12-team field even if they lost another game, but it would move them down in the rankings. And that is how Georgia could get a better path in the playoff this year.
As discussed, Georgia would have to play No. 4 Alabama and No. 1 Ohio State with how the bracket currently looks, but the teams on the other side of the bracket are nowhere near as scary. Indiana sits at No. 2 and Texas A&M sits at No. 3, and Georgia would likely much rather play those teams than Alabama or OSU. Georgia's first round opponent though would be harder than USF if they moved down in the rankings, but giving up an easy win feels worth it to make the later rounds in the playoff a little easier.
No one at Georgia should actually want UGA to lose another game. But if Georgia were to lose another game this season it wouldn't be the end of the world because their path in the College Football Playoff could actually get a little easier.
