Mike Bobo received a contract extension this offseason from Kirby Smart that many Georgia fans wish he never received. The Bulldogs haven’t won a College Football Playoff game in three years, and for whatever reason he is the person who gets the most blame to the point where some fans have wanted him to be fired.
Some of that blame is warranted and some of it was a bit ridiculous, but Smart made it clear that he thinks he’s the right man for the job. So far through Georgia’s first four games this season Bobo has left zero room for any logical person to criticize him.
Georgia’s No. 1 scoring offense
Bobo’s biggest flex this season is that Georgia has the No. 1 scoring offense in the country. The Bulldogs have averaged 54.75 points per game this season which is just above Florida as the top scoring team in the nation.
Sure this success has come against three bad teams and an Oklahoma squad who hasn’t lived up to their expectations, but that shouldn’t matter. Georgia plays teams every year they’re far better than and they usually don’t score this many points and win by as much as they are. This year’s offense has been different, and so far no one has been able to slow them down for 60 minutes.
Getting the most out of the young guys out wide
Georgia fans didn’t have many things to worry about heading into this year with quarterback Gunner Stockton returning and the UGA running backs and tight ends having more depth than they probably need. Even Georgia’s offensive line had a lot of experience coming back this year too. The same however couldn’t be said for Georgia’s wide receivers.
Georgia lost six of their top seven pass catchers from last season which included Zachariah Branch who set the single season receptions record. Bobo had to find a way to replace all of that talent with a young wide receiver room, and so far he’s succeeded.
Georgia is being led in receiving by sophomore Talyn Taylor and true freshman Craig Dandridge this season. If this trend continues they would be the first freshman-sophomore duo to lead Georgia in receiving since Brock Bowers and Jermaine Burton in 2021.
Bobo not only was able to bring in these talented youngsters, but he was able to get them ready to play at a high level early in their careers.
Mike Bobo still has more to prove
Having the No. 1 scoring offense in the country is great. Seeing Georgia predicted to win each game the rest of the season is quite nice as well. Everything has gone right for Mike Bobo and Georgia so far this season, but he still has one thing left to prove.
Since Bobo returned to Georgia to take over the offense they have not won a playoff game. They’ve had a good enough team to make a run in the CFP each year, but ever since Bobo’s been in control of the offense they haven’t been able to get it done.
Bobo doesn’t deserve all of the blame for this, but until Georgia can win at least one playoff game fans will keep wondering if Bobo can ever help Georgia win in the CFP. There is still a lot of work to do before Georgia even reaches the playoff this year, but if another year goes by without a playoff win then his biggest critics will only get louder.
Sure they’ve had nothing tangible to be upset about yet this year, but the only way to keep them quiet for good is by helping Georgia win in the College Football Playoff this season.
