The No. 1 recruit from the state of Georgia in the 2028 recruiting class is Casey Barner. He was just in town visiting Georgia during their win over Western Kentucky this past weekend, and it's clear that the Bulldogs are one of his top schools coming out of this visit.
In fact, Georgia insider Matt DeBary hinted at UGA being the team to beat in his recruitment right now, but the Ohio State Buckeyes aren't trailing far behind.
"The top-ranked prospect in Georgia for the 2028 class, Barner is a do-it-all prospect with the potential to be one of the best safeties in college football down the road," Matt DeBary said via si.com. "The toughness, instincts, ball skills, and versatility is why he's a major target for Smart and the Georgia defensive staff. Right now, sources say Georgia's biggest threat is Ohio State."
Georgia and Ohio State are duking it out for the Peach State's top recruits
Georgia has been recruiting Barner since middle school. He has reportedly visited Athens over 10 times, and this weekend he made another trip to Georgia to cement the Bulldogs as one of the top teams in his recruitment if not his No. 1 team right now.
Ohio State however is the team with the best chance to beat Georgia, according to DeBary.
Georgia and Ohio State have been trading blows recently for the top prospects in the state. David Jacobs is the No. 1 player from Georgia, and in the country, in the 2027 class who has been committed to Ohio State since last December. He however shocked the recruiting world by visiting Georgia this past weekend as well.
It turns out that he doesn't have much interest in Georgia right now but instead was visiting with his younger brother who is a four-star in the 2028 class. Ohio State is still the heavy favorite to win his recruitment, and they aren't slowing down with Barner either.
Barner not only is the top ranked player from the state of Georgia, but he is the No. 1 safety in the 2028 class and the No. 5 overall player in the country as well. He is already being tabbed as someone who could become the best safety in college football once he gets to college, and that is someone Georgia could desperately use on their team.
Barner still has over a year to go in his recruitment and there has been no public indication that he could commit anytime soon. Georgia and Ohio State will continue to push hard for him, but right now it looks like they are his top two teams right now, according to DeBary, with the slight edge being in Georgia's favor.
Other schools will continue pursuing him too, but for now Georgia and Ohio State have to love the position they are in.
