Paul Finebaum defends Georgia, berates CFP committee after updated rankings
There's no other way to put this, but Georgia football was completely disrespected in the latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings. The Bulldogs fell to No. 12 in the country after their loss to Ole Miss, which is a drop of nine spots. The fact that Gerogia fell in the rankings isn't the problem, they more than deserved to, but to fall all the was outside of the 12-team field is flat out insane.
Kirby Smart and Georgia have two great wins this season against Texas and Clemson, and some of the teams above them (Penn State, Indiana and Texas) do not have a single ranked win this year. On top of that, Miami (FL), who lost to an unranked team last weekend, is now ahead of Georgia even though they were behind UGA in last week's rankings.
So long story short, Georgia was not treated fairly in these rankings, and UGA fans have every reason to be upset.
My first thought is that maybe all UGA fans are just biased. But then the below statement from ESPN's Paul Finebaum came out which shows that maybe Georgia fans aren't biased after all.
Paul Finebaum defends Georgia, upset with CFP committee's rankings
"So, I don’t know how they (CFP committee) came up with these numbers," Finebaum said via on3.com. "Georgia started the season against Clemson, which has been ranked in the top 10 at the time. Their road schedule has been the toughest of anyone in the country, as you pointed out. They went to Alabama, Texas, and Ole Miss. They’ve all been ranked in the top 10. They also went to Kentucky, which is very poor but they did beat Ole Miss, which is ranked inside the system.”
“They (Georgia) have a chance. They’ll play Tennessee this weekend and if they win they’ll probably end up back in the committee’s good graces, but how the committee can disrespect them and put schools like Penn State? Are you serious? What has Penn State done this year? Do they even have a — their most impressive win, I think, was a five-loss team."
Georgia fans usually are not the biggest fans of Finebaums, so that is why this statement from him is very surprising because usually he is not one to defend Georgia. But that just goes to show how insane the committee's placement of Georgia really is.
However, no amount of complaining will change anything. All Georgia can do is go out and prove the committee wrong by beating No. 7 Tennessee this weekend. If they can do that, Georgia surely will move back up the rankings and inside the 12-team CFP field once again.
