2024 Week 2 12-team College Football Playoff prediction
By Josh Yourish
In Week 1, Georgia made a statement by stomping Clemson 34-3 in the Aflac Kickoff Game. In Week 2, the Bulldogs just handled their business. Kirby Smart’s team cruised to a 48-3 win over Tennessee Tech at Sanford Stadium behind five touchdown tosses from Carson Beck.
There is one problem though. The SEC won’t be easy. Sure, Kentucky, who Georgia opens conference play with next week, was blown out by South Carolina at home, but Texas and Ole Miss have looked almost as good as the Dawgs.
On Saturday, Ole Miss took care of business against another cupcake 52-3 against Middle Tennessee, and Texas went into the Big House in Ann Arbor Michigan, and stomped the defending champs. Even Tennessee rolled NC State 51-10 and the Vols defense only allowed 143 total yards.
It won’t be easy for the Dawgs to win the SEC, but Kirby Smart has won 41 straight regular season games for a reason, and that’s the same reason that Georgia is still No. 1 in my Week 2 12-team College Football Playoff prediction.
Rank | Team | Bid | Previous Rank |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Georgia | SEC Champion | 1 |
2 | Ohio State | Big Ten Champion | 2 |
3 | Miami (FL) | ACC Champion | 3 |
4 | Kansas State | Big 12 Champion | 4 |
5 | Texas | At-Large | 10 |
6 | Ole Miss | At-Large | 8 |
7 | Oregon | At-Large | 7 |
8 | Notre Dame | At-Large | 5 |
9 | Penn State | At-Large | 9 |
10 | Tennessee | At-Large | Unranked |
11 | USC | At-Large | 11 |
12 | Memphis | AAC Champion | 12 |
There are no changes at the top with my four conference champions. All four won and so did Memphis, who stays at No. 12. Even with a loss to Northern Illinois, Notre Dame will stay put in the top 12 with a very easy schedule the rest of the way and a win over Texas A&M already on the resume.
The biggest change is between SEC teams. Alabama beat USF 42-16, but 28 of those 42 points came in the fourth quarter after the Crimson Tide looked rough on offense most of the night. Kalen DeBoer and Jalen Milroe don’t look to be on the same page, so I’ll drop them out and slide Josh Heupel and Nico Iamaleava’s Vols into the No. 10 spot.
In this prediction, there are four SEC teams in the 12-team CFP and Georgia has to face the other three and only Tennessee is visiting Sanford Stadium. The Dawgs get a bye after next week's trip to Lexington and then the gauntlet begins with Alabama in Tuscaloosa on September, 28.
