Give it time, it always works... When it comes to recruiting, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs do not seem to get too up or down with every commitment, or de-commitment, in any given cycle. Over the last decade, Smart has established a phenomenal recruiting prowess overseeing his alma mater. Unfortunately, Georgia is not exactly cleaning up when it comes to its mid-tier 2027 recruiting class...
Georgia currently has seven players committed to their cause for 2027. While they do have a top-10 player in the class out-of-state committed in five-star running back Kemon Spell, UGA ranks 30th in the country in recruiting for this cycle. For a program that regularly recruits inside the top five, this cannot continue. Fortunately, Georgia just had a big recruiting weekend, and is about to have more.
The Dawgs had seven players in for official visits this past weekend, with upwards of 17 coming in at the end of the month. They also have a combined 30 coming in over the early part of June. Some of these players are committed to Georgia, while others may be committed somewhere else... For now, let's buckle in and see how the summer unfolds first before we panic. This is when Smart does shine.
Here are three recruits who were in Athens this past weekend who could be committing to UGA soon.
3. EDGE KJ Green ( Stephenson HS, Stone Mountain, GA)
One of the best prospects Georgia could hope to land in this recruiting cycle is Stone Mountain native KJ Green. The edge rusher out of Stephenson is the No. 6 player in Georgia, the No. 10 edge rusher in his class, and the No. 74 overall prospect. 247Sports actually has him as a top-10 player in the country for this cycle, while the composite is a bit more down on him... Could that matter here?
Green will be announcing where he will be playing his college football at on Aug. 8 on CBS Sports' College Football YouTube channel. Right now, he is slated to take four more official visits after being at Georgia this past weekend. He will be at Oregon on May 29, Texas on June 5, South Carolina on June 12, and Alabama on June 18. Georgia being first of five does not bode well, but he is in-state...
It might ultimately come down to if Georgia is willing to match what Oregon or Texas could spend.
2. WR Amare Patterson (Bluffton HS, Ridgeland, SC)
Four-star wide receiver Amare Patterson was another prospective recruit who was in Athens over the weekend. The Ridgeland, South Carolina native has 35 official offers, but is looking predominantly at Georgia and three other schools. He just took an official visit to Athens and has dates with LSU (May 29), Georgia Tech (June 2), and Florida (June 11) coming up. Can Georgia land this out-of-state guy?
According to the 247Sports Composite, Patterson is the No. 4 player from South Carolina, the No. 33 wide receiver in the country, and the No. 242 player in his class. The fact he is not looking at either Clemson or South Carolina really helps the Dawgs here. Of the three other serious competitors for his commitment, LSU seems to be the most menacing. He may be a big fan of Buster Faulkner at Florida.
As long as Patterson maintains a healthy relationship with James Coley, Georgia has a great chance.
1. LB Isaac McNeil (Vigor HS, Mobile, AL)
If there is one player who visited Georgia this past weekend who might be inclined to commit soon, that would be linebacker Isaac McNeil. The four-star from Mobile is the No. 4 prospect from Alabama, the No. 8 linebacker in his class, and the No. 111 overall recruit nationally. If there is any position on defense that Georgia does a better job of recruiting than anyone, it just so happens to be linebacker.
McNeil has three more recruiting visits lined up with Auburn on May 29, Florida on June 11, and Alabama on June 19. He did take another one to LSU on April 17, but 247Sports has the Tigers listed as "cool" for him. Jon Sumrall may be a former linebacker himself, but Georgia has a reputation for greatness at the position. The big key here is will McNeil spurn both major programs from Alabama...
If he is not over the moon about either Alabama or Auburn, McNeil may soon be on his way to UGA.
