Pros and cons of playing Texas and Texas A&M in the SEC Championship game
Georgia football has already clinched their spot in the SEC Championship game, but their opponent is still unknown. Kirby Smart and Georgia do know however that they will face the winner of the Texas and Texas A&M game this weekend.
So who would the better opponent be for Georgia? It might seem obvious that UGA would rather play Texas A&M because they are barely ranked inside the top 25. But it may not be that simple.
So while you try to decide who you would rather see Georgia play, here are some pros and cons for playing each team.
Texas Longhorns
There are a lot of pros that immediately come to mind if Georgia got to play Texas again. For starters, UGA already knows Texas far better than they would know Texas A&M because of their game earlier this season, so that familiarty with the Longhorns would be beneficial. Georgia also has the confidence knowing that they can beat Texas because they already did it once.
Georgia's style of play also matches up with Texas better, especially on defense (more to come on A&M). Lastly, starting QB Quinn Ewers is working through an injury, so Texas could be limited at their most important position.
However, it is very difficult to beat the same team twice in one season, so the Longhorns' extra motivation to avenge their loss from earlier this year could be troublesome for Georgia. Also, just like how Georgia knows a lot about Texas already, the Longhorns know a lot about them as well. Texas would know what adjustments to make this time around compared to the first game, so that fact could be a little scary for Georgia as well.
Texas A&M Aggies
On paper, Texas A&M is the weaker of these two teams. They already have three losses including an ugly loss to Auburn last weekend, so getting to play a 3-loss team in the SEC Championship game almost doesn't feel right. A&M also doesn't have any experience playing in a big postseason game like this, while Texas has the experience from the College Football Playoff last year.
The biggest and potentially only con of playing Texas A&M is their style of play on offense. Marcel Reed, their starting QB, is a true dual-threat aurterback who can beat you in the air or with his legs. Last weekend during their loss to Auburn, he threw for nearly 300 yards and ran the ball 21 times for 66 yards.
While 66 rushing yards isn't that impressive on that many carries, it does show how committed Texas A&M is to running the ball with Reed. Facing that would be bad news for Georgia because they have really struggled on defense this season with physical, running quarterbacks. This was seen last week against UMass and earlier this season with DJ Lagway and Florida.
It's also worth noting that Texas A&M will be more desperate than Texas in this game. The Longhorns would still make the CFP even with a loss in the SEC Championship game while A&M needs to win just to make it in. Sure Texas would still want to win, but Texas A&M would definitely be the team with the most motivation.
At the end of the day, it is going to be extremely difficult to beat either of these teams in the SEC Championship game. Both present unique challenges for Georgia while also benefitting the Bulldogs in other ways as well. But whoever Georgia does play, UGA is going to have to be ready for a tough game because both Texas and Texas A&M are going to be desperate and will really want to beat Georgia.
