Stetson Bennet has reached a massive point in his NFL career. He still hasn’t been given a chance to be a starter yet, but it’s hard to be upset about that when the LA Rams have had Matthew Stafford for Bennett’s entire career.
But Stafford is aging, so the Rams will need a new starter soon. Bennett is hoping that he’s next in line, but until then he needs to lock down the backup spot in hopes of sliding in Stafford’s place when he retires.
Bennett’s always known he’ll have to beat out someone else for this job though, and the Rams have found his new competition as they drafted former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Stetson Bennet has new competition in LA after the Rams drafted Ty Simpson
This may have been the worst case scenario for Bennett. The Rams were always likely to take a quarterback in the draft this year because current backup Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly thinking about retirement. If he goes then the Rams will need a third quarterback alongside Bennett and Stafford, so taking a QB in this year’s draft was a given.
But the Rams decided to use their first round pick to fill that spot which could be a sign that they don’t fully trust Bennett. If they did trust him then they may have opted to take a quarterback in the later rounds instead.
Bennett however has never shied away from competition. He had to beat out many great quarterbacks at Georgia before being handed the keys and winning two National Championships, so he won’t be intimidated by Simpson in the slightest.
And if the Rams decide to release or trade him that will give him even more motivation to prove them wrong at his next stop.
Bennett is a winner, no one can deny that. He has faced adversity throughout his entire football career, so this is just another potential bump in the road.
One thing is certain though, Bennett will give it his all and won’t be going down without a fight.
