ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) has updated their top 25 rankings ahead of the 2025 college football season. The FPI is one of the most talked about rankings in all of college football for one simple reason. It routinely releases rankings that make very little sense to the college football world, and no one actually knows what criteria is used to make these rankings.
Regardless, college football fans love to talk about these rankings and why they think their favorite team wasn't ranked fairly. In the below social media post, fans can see what the FPI rankings look like heading into the season, and Georgia is the No. 2 team in the country.
ESPN continues doubting Georgia against Texas
Most Georgia football fans might not be bold enough to rank the Bulldogs No. 2 in the country heading into this season, so there is no problem at all with UGA being ranked there. But why does everyone keep assuming Texas is better than Georgia?
Georgia and Texas played each other twice last season, and heading into both games the Bulldogs were not given much of a chance to win by college football analysts, fans, experts and Vegas. But as everyone knows, Georgia beat the Longhorns both times they played, including in the SEC Championship game. But it appears ESPN hasn't learned their lesson, because they still believe Texas is the better team.
Sure there are a lot of reasons to be excited about Texas this season, but one could argue that Georgia has even more. The Bulldogs have elite talent all over the field, including having the highest blue-chip ratio in Kirby Smart's career. On top of that, Texas quarterback Arch Manning might not deserve all the hype he is receiving. In fact, Georgia QB Gunner Stockton arguably deserves more hype than him.
At the end of the day, no preseason ranking means that much, especially ESPN's FPI. But it continues to make no sense why rankings continue to favor Texas over Georgia, even though the Bulldogs have owned the Longhorns during their short time in the SEC.
