Thursday has turned into quite the day for Georgia basketball on the news front. The day began with the Bulldogs picking up a commitment from Cal transfer guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, who was named the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman this past season.

While that was the biggest news of the day by far, some more news hit the program later in the day as one of Georgia’s three players who entered the transfer portal has announced where he will be playing ball next season.

Silas Demary Jr. is heading to UConn

Georgia guard Silas Demary Jr. was the first Bulldog to enter the transfer portal this offseason, and that sent shockwaves through Athens as he was one of Georgia’s top players this season. Demary averaged 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season, so it’s clear this was a big loss for the program.

The hope anytime a great player enters the portal is that they will change their mind and decide to stay in Athens, but there never seemed like a chance that would happen for Mike White and the Bulldogs. And that sentiment came true on Thursday when Demary announced that he has transferring to UConn.

The fact that a program like UConn, who is the two-time defending national champion, wants Demary to join their program in the first place shows just how special of a player he is. This is something everyone at Georgia learned this year as he helped carry Georgia to the NCAA Tournament when all hope seemed lost.

Even though it is sad to see him go, it will be fun to watch him at UConn as they historically are one of the best programs in the country. And who knows, maybe he’ll get a chance to make a run at a national championship next season with the Huskies.
