Last week Jake Wilkins became the first Georgia transfer to announce where he’ll be playing basketball next season. Now it is time for center Somto Cyril to do the same.

Cyril was regarded as one of the top centers in the Transfer Portal when he decided to leave Georgia. Many of the big name programs were reaching out to him to try and earn his commitment, but he made the shocking decision on Sunday to transfer to Miami.

Is would’ve made a lot of since if he went to one of those big name schools, but the fact that he went to Miami is a serious indictment on Georgia’s program as a whole.

Somto Cyril’s departure to Miami is difficult to explain

There are a lot of programs out there that Georgia just can’t compare themselves to. Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, UConn and a few others are programs that no one would be upset seeing former Bulldogs transfer to. Miami however isn’t one of those schools.

Is Miami really a better program than Georgia? Or are they closer to being at the same level as UGA? Most would probably agree that they are similar programs, so that is why leaving Georgia to go to Miami doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Maybe Miami offered a massive NIL deal that he just couldn’t say no to. It seems like that’s what won Carson Beck over last year, so there is a chance that’s in play here. But just like Wilkins who transferred to Cal, seeing Cyril go to a school that isn’t noticeably better than Georgia is a bit strange.

Mike White has his work cut out for him. After being embarrassed in the NCAA Tournament two years in a row people were already beginning to question how good he actually is. But now that his former players are transferring to schools on the same level as Georgia those questions are only going to get louder.
