Georgia football is a few practices in to their 2025 fall camp, and so far there is one Bulldog who has been missing. Illinois transfer running back Josh McCray was nowhere to be seen during Georgia's first practice on Thursday, and no one at Georgia gave a reason for his absence.

This was obviously a big deal because McCray porjects to be Georgia's No. 2 running back behind Nate Frazier this season. So a potential injury to McCray would have been heartbreaking at this point in Georgia's offseason.

UGA insider Brooks Austin however was able to speak with his sources about McCray, and it thankfully sounds like he is only dealing with an illness right now.

Josh McCray's status is key for Georgia's revamped RB room

No futher details about McCray's illness were shared by Austin, but it's likely safe to assume that it is nothing serious. So assuming that McCray will be ready to go for Georgia's first game on Aug. 30, what does UGA's running back room look like right now?

Austin shared some key intel on that as well, and it sounds like a lot of running backs have been impressing so far during fall camp.

"Chauncey Bowens had a great spring game, Bo Walker was the talk of spring practice, and now it appears Dwight Phillips is the young back making plays at practice," Austin shared via si.com. "The speedster found his way into the lineup a year ago as a true freshman, and it appears he will be doing so again early on this fall."

Based on what Austin shared, it appears the Bulldogs have three young running backs who have been extremely impressive so far in practice. Austin also didn't even mention veteran Cash Jones and Roderick Robinson either who both project to get a fair amount of snaps this fall as well.

Based on this intel, it looks like Georgia's running back room will be one of the deepest positions Georgia has this season. And after the 2024 season where Georgia's group couldn't overcome the injury bug, it is a huge relief that this room is so deep this year.
