Stetson Bennett had an amazing performance in the Rams' second preseason game of the year on Saturday, but his stellar game doesn't change the fact that his future still remains uncertain. Even if his performance earned the Rams' backup job for the upcoming season (which hasn't been confirmed), the Rams' future quarterback at this point is likely still Ty Simpson and it's going to take a lot of effort for Bennett to change that.
The Rams seem like they want to give Bennett every chance to prove his worth beyond this season, but that will be challenging for him to accomplish. With his future being as uncertain as it is there is a world where ending up on a new team next year is the best scenario for Bennett.
Stetson Bennett's future remains uncertain even after impressive peformance in Rams' preseason game
Many NFL analysts and fans believe that Ty Simpson is the Rams' future quarterback regardless of what Bennett does this season. That belief came into existence when the Rams drafted Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
It's unlikely that the Rams would give up on Simpson after one year. Even if he struggles and Bennett continues to thrive they still will likely choose to ride with Simpson into the future because they believed in him enough to use a first round pick on him. So that puts Bennett in a position where this could be his last season in LA regardless of how well he plays.
That may not be a bad thing for Bennett though. His contract with the Rams expires after this season which means he will be able to look for a new team to sign with next offseason. He may be able to find a team that actually wants to give him a chance to be a starter, but for that to be possible he needs to continue playing at a high level with the Rams any chance he gets to increase his chances of being signed by a new team in the future.
Stetson Bennett must leave no doubt that he is better than Ty Simpson
Throughout training camp Bennett has been the leader over Simpson to be the Rams' backup this season, but he needs to leave no doubt that he is better than Simpson.
If Bennett can look much better than Simpson this year then there's a chance the Rams could resign him again next offseason. Current starter Matthew Stafford is closing in on retirement, so if the Rams signed Bennett again next year he could compete to be their next starter when Stafford is done playing.
Bennett also needs to be the backup all season so he can have a few moments where he plays during the regular season. He would maybe get a chance as the backup to play at the end of blowout games, and those small opportunities could lead to another team or the Rams liking what they see and signing him next offseason. There's always a chance Stafford could get hurt too, and if that happens Bennett needs to be the backup so he can step in and take over the offense.
There are a few ways Bennett's career could go after this season, but to be in the best position to succeed in the future he needs to be No. 2 on the Rams' depth chart all season long. So far it looks like he is their backup right now, but for the rest of training camp and throughout the regular season he needs to leave no doubt that he is better than Simpson.
