Alabama fans thought they had a reason to brag the moment the Rams drafted Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson in the first round of the NFL Draft. They thought this was a sign that the Rams were giving up on Stetson Bennett in favor of their beloved quarterback, but how quickly Alabama fans forgot who Bennett is.
All offseason Bennett and Simpson battled for the backup quarterback job in LA. Both players had great moments throughout practice and in their preseason games as they tried to win the job, but ahead of the Rams season opener on Thursday the nod was given to Bennett.
This gave Georgia fans yet another reason to flex over Alabama. The Tide thought their first round quarterback was plenty good enough to just show up and beat Bennett, but that isn't what happened. Bennett proved that where you're picked in the NFL Draft ultimately doesn't matter because in the NFL everything is earned. Simpson wasn't good enough to beat Bennett for the job, so even though he has the "first round pick" title next to his name he'll be riding the bench behind Bennett.
Bennett got his first chance to play in an NFL regular season game on Thursday with the game out of reach. He played the final three minutes where he completed two of three passes for 13 yards to go along with a nine yard run on the second snap of his career.
Georgia's bragging rights over Alabama extend beyond the NFL playing field
Not only does Georgia have bragging rights over Alabama courtesy of Stetson Bennett, but they have them on the college football field as well.
Georgia is the two-time defending SEC Champion and the favorite to win the conference again this season, so that gives them bragging rights over every team in the SEC. The Bulldogs also just beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game last season, so even though the Tide won in Athens last year Georgia won the most recent matchup which was the far more important one.
Georgia's bragging rights over Alabama extend back to Stetson Bennett's college career too. He lost the first game he started against Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship game, but he bounced back one month later to beat the Tide in the national championship game. Bennett then led Georgia to a perfect 15-0 record the following season which ended in another national title. They didn't play Alabama that season, but they left no doubt that they were the best team in the country throughout the 2022 season.
Sure Alabama has the better head-to-head record since Kirby Smart took over as head coach, but in this current moment Georgia has nearly all of the bragging rights. Georgia and Alabama will meet in Tuscaloosa this season which gives the Tide a chance to get some bragging rights back on their side, but imagine everything Georgia will be able to say if they beat Alabama for the first time since 2007 in Tuscaloosa.
