Stetson Bennett's NFL career is as uncertain as ever before. He is entering the final season of his contract with the LA Rams and he is yet to play a meaningful down of football in the regular season.
This puts him in a dangerous spot as his contract is set to expire next offseason because the Rams may not know what to do with him because they still don't know what his true potential in the NFL is. On top of that, other NFL organizations may be nervous to take a chance on him too since he hasn't played yet.
All of that makes this year the biggest of Bennett's career, so when a reporter said he thinks the Rams view Bennett as "expendable" it is officially time to be worried about his future in the NFL.
"If Bennett continues to develop the way he did last season, he'll make the team," Cameron DaSilva said via ugawire.usatoday.com. "He'll be too valuable to cut and would likely be scooped up by one of the other 31 teams off waivers. But if he can't beat out Simpson in camp and the preseason, he'll be expendable."
One decision made the LA Rams thoughts on Stetson Bennett very clear
During the 2026 NFL Draft the Rams decided to draft former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with their first round pick. After doing so they said that Bennett will be able to compete against him in LA, but he writing is already on the wall.
Why would anyone use a first round draft pick on a quarterback if they are going to be the string on the depth chart? Even if Bennett beats out Simpson this season they could still choose to ride with Simpson in the long run as their backup because he is a cheaper option with Bennett's contract expiring at the end of the season.
The Rams said all the right things after drafting Simpson to save their locker room, but they didn't have to say anything to make their position clear. They do not fully trust Bennett. If they did they would've never drafted Simpson, but they made their thoughts on Bennett abundantly clear and that is why reporters are now calling him expendable.
Stetson Bennett may be better off without the Rams
Bennett might be better off without the Rams. He has been with the Rams for three seasons now and they are yet to give him a true opportunity. So far in his career he has been the third string quarterback in LA, but with Jimmy Garoppolo out of the picture this was his chance to be the true backup which is an important role in the NFL.
But instead of trusting him the Rams went out and got Simpson instead.
With Bennett's contract expiring after this season it may be wise for him to move to a new team. The Rams have made it clear that they don't trust him, so why would he want to keep playing for them?
The best thing for his career might just be a fresh start, and that could come as early as next season if a team is willing to take a chance on him.
