The LA Rams begin their season on Thursday against the 49ers and Stetson Bennett will be their backup quarterback over rookie Ty Simpson. Unfortunately for Bennett he is not a traditional backup because head coach Sean McVay said he and Simpson are 2A and 2B in his eyes.
"I'll tell you when I decide who is going to be the actual two in the game," McVay said via therams.com. "I've talked to the players about it, but that's something that they're both going to continue to train regardless of who it ends up being up and who is the emergency third. I look at it as both of those guys are going to play, but you saw, we listed Stetson as the two, Ty as the three. But I look at it as the two A, two B and we'll see how we approach the game."
Rams refues to put their full trust in Stetson Bennett
The Rams had to put someone at No. 2 on their depth chart and they ultimately went with Bennett. McVay's comments however make it seem like they don't have a lot of confidence in him.
McVay said that he will make his decision on who he wants to play if they ever need to play a backup quarterback when that time comes, he does not want to commit to anyone right now. Typically a coach does not say that because it is assumed that whoever is No. 2 on the depth chart would be the player to come in if needed. McVay however is leaving the door open for Simpson to play even though Bennett is listed No. 2 on the depth chart right now.
Apparently the players have been told who will play if starter Matthew Stafford can't go for whatever reason and it seems like that player would be Bennett since he was named the first backup. Other comments from McVay though make it seem like it could be Simpson, so at this point who knows what he is thinking.
Stetson Bennett's future in LA is looking shaky at best
The writing appeared to be on the wall for a long time that Bennett was going to be the Rams' backup this season. He started the two preseason games he played this year and he got reps with the first team over Simpson in practice, but for some reason the Rams waited this long to commit to him being their backup.
Now even though he is listed No. 2 on their depth chart they still aren't willing to fully commit to him. Instead they are still giving Simpson hope that he could be the one to play if the Rams have to turn to a backup this season even though Bennett is technically their backup.
That not only questions if Bennett is their true backup but it shows that his future in LA might be over. After this year Bennett's contract with the Rams expires and if they view Simpson as an equal quarterback to him it's hard to see them resigning him.
Bennett hopefully will get signed by a team who is willing to give him a chance to be their starter, but at this point his future remains about as uncertain as ever before.
