Georgia is looking to win the SEC for the third year in a row this season. They would be only the third school to pull that off since the SEC Championship game was introduced in the early 1990s.
Standing in their way are a few teams, but the consensus is that Texas is the most likely team to knock them off their pedestal. In fact, much of the media and college football world are predicting they will win the SEC even though Georgia is the clear top dog in the conference.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian however knows that he will most likely have to beat Georgia this year if he wants to win the SEC. He even made it clear at SEC Media Days that his goal this year is to finally beat Georgia, but Georgia shouldn’t be worried about Texas at all right now.
"There's a lot of sayings and quotes in the sports world in particular, but this one probably is the most fitting," Sarkisian said via ugawire.usatoday.com. "'If you want to be the champion, you got to beat the champion.' It's no more fitting for us. We've played Georgia three times. They've beaten us. All the credit in the world to Kirby (Smart), their team. They're tough. They're good. If we want to be a champion, I'm guessing we'll probably have to beat the champion to make that happen."
Steve Sarkisian, Texas are the last thing Georgia should be worried about
Is Texas a threat to Georgia in the race for the SEC this year? They absolutely are. In fact, it would be a bit surprising if they weren’t waiting for them in Atlanta if Georgia gets back to the SEC Championship game.
But Georgia has too much to worry about before they can worry about Texas. Georgia and Texas do not play during the regular season this year, so why would they worry about them right now? Georgia needs to focus on the nine SEC teams that are actually on their schedule, because if they don’t get past them then it won’t matter if Texas is in the SEC Championship game or not.
Georgia also is a perfect 3-0 against Texas since they joined the league, so that’s another reason why they shouldn’t worry about them.
So while Sarkisian and Texas are busy focusing on Georgia, Kirby Smart and his team aren’t thinking about them even a little. If the time comes where they meet Texas in the SEC Championship game then Georgia will start thinking about them, but Smart has to get Georgia their first.
And based on hard Texas’ schedule is this year it might be wise for Sarkisian to focus more on who he’s guaranteed to play.
