Georgia football has dominated the SEC over the past half decade. However, the one team that Georgia has found the most success against is Tennessee.
The Vols have been a very solid team in recent years especially after current head coach Josh Heupel took over four years ago. However, they have been unable to find any sort of success against Georgia as the Bulldogs have won eight straight against Tennessee with all eight wins coming by at least 14 points.
Huepel was asked about his record against Georgia at SEC Media Days this week, and it's safe to say that he is very embarrassed about how he and Tennessee have done against Georgia.
"Thanks for reminding me," said Heupel via ugawire.usatoday.com. "We haven't been able to be on the right side of the scoreboard in that game. That's players and coaches together ultimately being a little bit better."
Georgia is in for a tough battle against Tennessee this season
Georgia and Tennessee once again will do battle this season in Knoxville. Tennessee will be Georgia's first true test of the season as the Bulldogs hit the road week three to face a hungry Vols team after opening the seaosn against two easy non-conference opponents.
Tennessee once again is a team that has the talent to compete with the top of the SEC, so it's just a matter of if they will be able to put it together this year. One thing is certain though, Heupel and Tennessee are going to be ready for the Bulldogs when Georgia and Kirby Smart come to town.
"Kirby (Smart) and their staff and their players have done a really good job and played really well in those games," Heupel continued. "It will be important for us, that's Week 3, that we're ready to go play at the level that we need to against a really good football team."
A win for Georgia against Tennessee this season not only will extend their win streak against the Vols to nine, but it will set UGA up to compete for another SEC Championship. A loss however will make that goal tough to accomplish especially with a date against Alabama up next after a bye week.
So while the Tennessee game is extremely important every season, this year's edition may be the most important in this rivalry's recent history.
