It has been over a month since Georgia beat Tennessee in overtime, but the Volunteers still have that loss on their mind. Tennessee running back Star Thomas for some reason decided to bring up Georgia after the Volunteers loss to Alabama this past weekend, and he made a wild claim that Georgia didn’t beat Tennessee but the Volunteers beat themselves.
Vols RB Star Thomas: No disrespect to Georgia and Alabama. Those are two really good teams with good players. But we lost those games because of ourselves. We beat ourselves.

Tennessee still refuses to give Georgia any credit
In case anyone forgot, Georgia took down Tennessee 44-41 in overtime during week three. The Volunteers got off to an impressive start in this game by taking an early 21-7 lead, but Georgia did what they’ve done all season and clawed their way back to win in overtime.
Thomas however isn’t ready to give Georgia any credit for this win. Instead he is choosing to say that Tennessee lost this game, because they apparently beat themselves.
To be fair, there is a little truth to this because Tennessee missed a game-winning field goal as time expired in regulation. So that technically was Tennessee beating themselves, but what Thomas is failing to realize is that they could have won this game long before that kick was missed.
As mentioned, Tennessee had an early 14 point lead and looked to be well on their way to a marquee victory. But after scoring a quick 21 points, their offense slowed down while their defense failed to get many stops against Georgia’s offense. If Tennessee had scored one other time or gotten one more stop on defense they wouldn’t have needed a late field goal to win. But that miss is the easy play to blame instead of what transpired throughout the rest of the game.
At the end of the day though it doesn’t matter what Thomas thinks. The record books show that Georgia won, and if Tennessee helped along the way then that’s their fault. Great teams take advantage of the mistakes from their opponent, and that’s what Georgia did in overtime. What great teams don’t do is complain about the result of a game over a month later.
Maybe, just maybe that mindset is why Georgia has beat Tennessee nine years in a row now.
