Georgia football just played the longest game in all of college football this season (and the second longest in the history of the sport) after they beat Georgia Tech in eight overtimes on Friday night.
This game was super draining even for Georgia fans, but can you imagine how exhausted the team has to be after this game? This likely was not only the most draining game physically, but also mentally as Georgia had to fight back after facing a huge deficit in the first half. So it's really nice that this game happened on Friday, so UGA can have an extra day of rest before facing Texas in the SEC Championship game.
Speaking of Texas, Longhorns' head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioned during a recent press conference that he stayed up to watch Georgia's game against Tech, and he even mentioned how the Bulldogs could use this extra rest as well.
"I don't know. I don't put too much thought into that," Sarkisian said via 247sports.com. "I just focus on what we need to do to prepare. It's a normal workweek for us. I'm sure they need the extra day. That was a long game. I stayed up and watched it. That was a marathon. I was exhausted watching it myself, so... In the end it's a normal workweek for us. I don't put too much thought into an extra day or not."
Was Sarkisian taking a shot at Georgia?
While it may seem like Sarkisian was taking a shot at Georgia, it’s more than likely that he wasn’t. What he said is something that everyone else is already thinking themselves, that Georgia needs a lot of time to rest and recover.
This extra day after the Georgia Tech came will be helpful, but even that isn’t enough with all of the injuries Georgia is dealing with right now.
Georgia will get a lot of time off after the SEC Championship game whether they win or lose. If they lose, they will get about two weeks before their first round game in the CFP. However, a win would give them a bye and time off until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day when the quarterfinals of the CFP are played. That’s a huge difference in the amount of time Georgia gets to rest and heal up.
So hopefully Kirby Smart and Georgia are able to win this weekend so they can get the rest that Sarkisian thinks Georgia desperately needs.
