Tuesday has not been a good day for Georgia football on the recruiting trail. The Bulldogs have now lost multiple recruitments on Tuesday with the latest example coming from five-star defensive lineman James Johnson who just flipped his commitment from UGA to Texas.

Texas steals second 5-star recruit of the day from Georgia

Johnson was one of Georgia's top commits in their 2026 recruiting class. In fact, after an update to Rivals recruiting rankings on Monday, Johnson officially became a five-star player. On top of that, he was named the No. 10 overall player in the country and the No. 1 defensive lineman in the 2026 recruiting class as well.

Johnson originally committed to Georgia back on June 28, but just two weeks later On3's Hayes Fawcett announced that he has flipped his commitment from Georgia to Texas.

Losing any commit will always be a bad thing for Georgia, but losing a five-star recruit makes this loss even worse. On top of that, this is the second five-star recruit of the day that Georgia lost to Texas as five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson spurned Georgia and committed to Texas earlier in the day as well.

The thing however that makes losing Johnson the biggest loss of the recruiting cycle for Georgia is that the Bulldogs no longer have the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Georgia passed USC on Monday after Rivals updated their recruiting rankings, but losing Johnson dropped Georgia from the top spot to No. 2.

While there are a lot of reasons why this loss should sting for Georgia, Johnson may not be the type of player that fits in Georgia's culture. Johnson was only committed to UGA for two weeks, so if it's that easy for someone to flip their commitment this fast then they were probably never the right fit for Georgia in the first place.
