The College Football Plauoff is about to expand again. The 2026 season will only be the third year with the 12-team playoff, but reports on Thursday indicated that the playoff is reaching its final stages to expand to 24 teams with the expectation for it to begin with the 2027 season.

The playoff expanding means that many aspects of college football will change along with it. Potentially the biggest change that will likely occur along with the expanded playoff is that conference championship games will no longer exist.

There isn’t enough room for extra playoff games with how the college football calendar is set up today, and the idea to end conference title games has already been floated around in the past. No official word on conference championship games ending has been reported yet, but if the playoff expands before next year then this season will likely be the final SEC Championship game ever.

2026 could be Georgia’s last chance to win the SEC Championship game

Georgia has found a lot of success in the SEC Championship game over the years. The Bulldogs are tied for the second most appearances with 13 while also having the third most wins with six. A lot of those losses occurred at the hands of Alabama during the prime Nick Saban years, but recently Georgia has dominated the game. They have made it to Atlanta five years in a row and have won three of those games which includes winning the previous two titles.

It seems like this year could be the last season the game exists though. If the title game ends the SEC will still crown a conference champion every year, but it will be based on regular season records which means there could be shares titles. 2026 could go down as the last real SEC Champion, so it’s important for Georgia to win it so they will always be remembered as they last winner.

Georgia’s 3-peat would end the SEC title game on a historic high

Georgia has not won the SEC three years in a row since the SEC Championship game was introduced. In fact, Florida and Alabama are the only two schools who have pulled that off.

Georgia has a chance to join them this year though if they were to win the SEC.

This year could end up being the last opportunity for Georgia to win the SEC Championship game ever, so if they want to join Florida and Alabama in the history books as the only teams to win three in a row this is their last chance. The good news for Georgia is that their win over Alabama has put them in a great position to win the conference this year.

Georgia still has a lot of work to do to win the SEC, but if this ends up being the last season with a title game it would be fun for Georgia to end the championship game era by winning their third title in a row.
