The NCAA isn’t really known for making good decisions that actually help schools. Last year however they announced a big change to the college football Transfer Portal as they moved from two windows to one.
Previously the portal would open for a second time after spring ball. This offseason however is the first year the portal won’t open a second time, and Smart recently discussed how much this is helping him prepare Georgia for the season ahead.
“With there being no spring portal for us, it’s actually brought some sanity to your roster being your roster,” Smart said via dawgnation.com. “Now that could be positive and that could be negative because there’s a lot of coaches out there that would love to, ‘Oh man, I’d love to get this guy or get that guy or kids would like to move.’ But now that you’re fixed, it puts a little more pressure on.”
Kirby Smart knows the NCAA did him a big favor without meaning to
There aren’t many coaches out there who are better developers of talent than Smart. When he gets his hands on a player he is almost always able to get the best version of themself out, and that process begins during spring ball.
The second portal window however ruined the progress he would make with players because some would leave after spending the spring in Athens. But now that everyone’s roster is set in stone, Smart can focus on making his team better instead of worrying about who could be leaving.
This same advantage exists everywhere, but there aren’t many other coaches who can stack up with Smart. So Georgia owes the NCAA a big thank you because they made their life much easier and gave them a slight advantage over the rest of the country without even realizing it.
