This Ryan Day and Kirby Smart comparison makes no sense

Kirby Smart should not be compared to a coach who can't win a national championship.

Georgia football has moved up two spots in the latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings. One of the reasons UGA was able to move up was because of Ohio State’s loss this past weekend at home to a 6-win Michigan team. This loss from Ohio State dropped the Buckeyes four spots to No. 6, directly behind Georgia.

Ohio State and Georgia’s resumes are very comparable this season, there’s no denying that. But one thing that shouldn’t be compared is Ohio State head coach Ryan Day to Kirby Smart.

Ohio State fans want Ryan Day fired

This past weekend’s loss to Michigan was Ohio State's fourth loss in a row to the Wolverines. This moved Day’s record against Ohio State’s biggest rival to 1-4. The four straight losses to Michigan and the fact that Day hasn’t been able to bring a national championship home to Ohio State is causing many OSU fans to want Day to be fired.

And whether that’s a good decision or not is one thing, but the above post is using Smart as a reason why Day shouldn’t be fired. The post is making the point that Smart is 1-6 in his career against Alabama yet still hasn’t been fired. But this rationale makes absolutely no sense.

For starters, Gerogia and Alabama are not rivals. However, Ohio State and Michigan might be the biggest rivalry in college football. So while Georgia does not like Alabama, it is nowhere near the level of the hate seen between Ohio State and Michigan.

Then there’s the obvious reason why this comparison makes no sense. Smart has won two national championships at Georgia and Day has won zero. That simple fact changes the dynamic of this discussion completely.

Day will still have a chance to win a national championship this season, and if he does then this comparison to Smart will then make sense. But until then, it’d be wise to not compare these two coaches because one as won at the highest level multiple times and the other hasn’t been able to win the big game yet.
